genus
SHIBATAEA
In
honor of the Japanese botanist, Keita Shibata (1877-1949)
Subfamily:
Bambusoideae
Shibataea
are small shrub-like clumping or slowly running bamboos
native to China and Japan. Their thin culms have a slightly
zig-zag aspect and carry dense coverings of foliage
from the tiny whorled branchlets, making for well-furnished
specimens, looking like a miniature Phyllostachys,
ideal for garden use.
Culture:
Shibataea thrives in full or partial
shade with abundant moisture and rich, well drained
acid soil. Established plants withstand flooding, yet
do not enjoy a windy exposure.
