genus
PLEIOBLASTUS
From
the Greek "pleios", many, and "blastos",
bud, a reference to the numerous buds and shoots formed
from the nodes of these bamboos.
Subfamily:
Bambusoideae
Small
or shrub-like running bamboos native mostly to China
and the islands of Honshu, Shikaku, and Kyushu in Japan.
Pleioblastus are valued in
gardens for their profuse leafy running shoots, which
may be cut back and sheared as a hedge, or left to form
a natural stand of arching canes. Dwarf species may
be mowed as a groundcover. Several cultivars have been
selected for their beautifully
variegated foliage.
Culture:
Pleioblastus thrive in sun or light
shade if provided with abundant moisture and rich soil.
In hot interior climates or where drought may be expected,
some shading will be beneficial for most varieties.
Established plants withstand flooding.
